Melora started with a vision: to tell the world about health benefits of New Zealand indigenous plant, Mānuka
New Zealand’s super plant Mānuka
Our story began with Phil & Sharan Caskey, back in the mid 1990’s, who had a vision to have the traditional Māori knowledge of the Mānuka plant recognised as an important and worthwhile resource for world health. It was the Mānuka honey produced from Mānuka blossoms that first caught Phil and Sharan’s attention. Working alongside the University of Waikato which unlocked the unique benefits of Mānuka honey, Phil co-created and registered the first Mānuka honey wound care dressing in the world in 2003.
Further investigation into the unique properties of Mānuka, lead Phil to realise that it is the plant and the distinct climatic conditions of New Zealand which make Mānuka so special. Mānuka oil is Phil and Sharan’s latest passion. With the potential to revolutionise the Mānuka industry, this ingredient, extracted from the brush of our very own super plant, is scientifically proven to have very high antibacterial properties and is a key ingredient platform for our innovation pipeline. With a dedicated R&D team and world-leading oil operation facilities, we have become the largest Mānuka oil producer and exporter in New Zealand.
A partnership with landowners
It all starts with the land where our indigenous Mānuka trees sprout and thrive. To ensure we consistently deliver the most pure, potent and efficacious Mānuka oils for you and your family, we have set about creating a fair and open agreement with the landowners for sustainable harvesting and planting Mānuka on their land. This agreement makes sure we grow, nurture and cultivate Mānuka plantations, as well as landowner relationships that are mutually beneficial, now and most importantly well into the future. We are taking a generational approach and we want to create real value and opportunities for landowners to share with their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren to come.
Caring for nature, is at the heart of everything we do
Ensuring we work with and care for our environment has always been incredibly and inevitably important to us. After all, Mānuka is our precious natural resource. From the moment we step onto the land, we re-use, reduce and recycle to keep our environmental footprint as small as possible.
A local and family-like workplace
Employing and partnering with local people is one of the most important and wonderful aspects of everything we do and will never stop doing. Together we are working as a community within very small rural communities of the remote coastal regions where our Mānuka trees flourish. Our focus on employing local people has also kept our business very family oriented, even as we continue to grow into a large, global enterprise.
Giving back to our communities
Aside from employment and the associated business opportunities now flourishing around our Mānuka activities, we always support and give back to those in our surrounding communities through sponsorships and donations. People who work with us are also offered training and education, offering them a bright and exciting future with our company.
